SONY GRAND WEGA SRDX SELECT HDMI 1080P
The lawsuit alleges the defendants falsely advertised the display resolution of its Sony Grand Wega SXRD rear-projection television models KDS-R5OXBR1 and KDS-R6OXBR1, because the televisions were incapable of accepting input of 1080p signals and could not accept and display video content at 1080p resolution via the televisions' PC and HDMI Input. The preliminary settlement includes all United States end user consumers who purchased, or received as a gift from the original retail purchaser, a KDS-R5OXBR1 or KDS-R6OXBR1 television.

07 CV 15474,United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Much of what you have said (that I have read) indicates all your experience from having seen a display at an Apple Store? If I'm wrong, I am glad to be corrected.San Francisco, CA: A proposed settlement has been granted preliminary approval in the defective product class action lawsuit pending against Sony Electronics, entitled Date v. Moreover, I was not aware that you even owned an Apple tv. I would just like for you to give the OP a chance to get the best possible out of what he's purchased. I don't in any way question your right to express your opinion on the quality (or lack thereof) of video downloads from iTunes. So I choose to try to help him get the picture as good as possible, rather than to tell him not to waste his time. Second, we also can't know if his setup is correct. So we can't know, first, his perception of quality. Now, nether you nor I have seen the OP's setup. When I went in through HDMI, matching the panel's native rate, everything looked just fine.

Normally, if you install a Pio option board, this enables multimedia input timings for all inputs, including the native ones. It turned out that I had connected via the plasma's native DVI input that, in the absence of a multimedia option board (Pio 434cmx), only supports PC-based signal timings.

Personally, when I brought my first Apple tv home and connected it, I was puzzled at the lack of picture quality. What I object to is that you assume, without having personally witnessed his setup, that there is nothing he can do to optimize his video. And not knowing the behavior of your display as far as native res, you should check your screen representation mode to avoid loss of resolution due to image scaling or distortion (i.e., zoom or wide modes). Obviously the best image quality will be obtained with non-scaled content. One added point is that the native res is 1920x1080. In the "Connections" section, they do call out multimedia display modes for component. UPDATE: Correction, it looks like the oversight was only in the specs section. Lastly, it would be useful to know how old your iTunes video content is? Apple made a change (increased resolution) to video quality some time ago, which would beg the question - new or old standard? But, it raises the question whether you have successfully input another HD source to the component input(s) and obtained satisfactory results? And, it would be a good idea to, at least temporarily, test the Apple tv into an HDMI input. This may very well be an oversight (hopefully). Strangely, Sony indicates multimedia display modes only on the two HDMI inputs (1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i).

I took a quick look at the tech documents for your display. You didn't specify how you setup the Apple tv in this regard (other than using component input). It's most likely that the issue is related to your video interconnect coupled with the display mode chosen.
